Abstract

SIMPEL is a Superimposed Multimedia Presentation Editor and Player. It enables the user to create presentations from marks (information at sub-document granularity) over multimedia content. Using the SIMPEL Editor, the user can structure a presentation by inserting marks on a timeline. The SIMPEL player is then used to play or present the individual marks in a time-synchronized fashion. SIMPEL relates to other multimedia presentation technology and software such as the Amsterdam model, the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL), multimedia editors and players like Real Producer, QuickTime, Director, etc. The key difference between these works and SIMPEL is that SIMPEL allows the user to work with information at sub-document granularity, while maintaining links to this information in its original context. This contextual information is lost many times while building multimedia presentations using the technologies mentioned above. Working with marks enables information reuse by allowing the user to create them once and later use them at multiple places. In this report we describe the development of SIMPEL, including application description, design, and finally implementation. This report also documents the other approaches that we considered while developing SIMPEL.
